I Heart Fall!
In my life, fall starts the moment I step back into the elementary school building where I work for the first time after summer. Back-to-school time for teachers starts well before the students walk through the door. So for me, summer is over and as much as I love the season, I don't mind. It's a time of new beginnings - the fall and winter garden is growing, new recipes are being created and crafted in order to preserve the harvest, and the garden is getting cleaned up and renewed for next year.
While you're in the whirlwind of the gardening and food preservation chores that come with the end of summer, I hope you will also take some time to celebrate a job well done and the bounty you cultivated. I'll be celebrating my efforts at the Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair on Saturday, September 7th. It's an amazing opportunity to connect with other local urban farmers and gardeners, buy gardening goodies from amazing local vendors and even learn some new skills at the various demonstration tables. I'll be holding down the fort in the food preservation department and you know I'll be rocking a DIY harvest fair herb crown. Will you?
I wish you all a wonderful September, my friends! I'll see you in the fall!Love, Stacy
Plant this now!
It's time to plant greens! Sow:lettuce spinach arugula You will want to plant these seeds where you can cover them with a cloche once our weather starts to really cool down. For the month of September though, during our warmer, Indian summers, they'll be fine without it!
Plant a block or row of these seeds every other week this month in order to end up with a staggered, fall harvest. I put reminders in my calendar so that I will remember when to sow! Sometimes a gentle nudge is all we need to get the job done!
